Call T&F Contact Michael Stambaugh for more details - 386.481.2278 SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman track & field set off the 2010 Outdoor season this past weekend at Ted Wright Stadium, in the Savannah State Eye Opener. The Wildcats set a great tone for the year, grabbing twenty-eight top finishes, including seven in first place. The B-CU women finished the meet in third place.
One of several golds for the Wildcat women, Ryan Sanders topped the field in the 100m dash, finishing in a time of 12.82 seconds. Also in the 100, Apple Harris came in third in 12.98. In the 800 meter, freshman Asia Henry led all half-milers with a time of 2:25.42 and first place. Just steps behind, Alexandria Condell came in second with a time of 2:28.74, while LaShondra Wilbon also scored for B-CU, finishing seventh in 2:40.22. In the shot put, Ron Danielle Williams continued her consistent success, winning the even with a throw of 14.65 m (48-08.00 ft.). Maketa Ruffin finished fourth with a toss of 11.75 m (38-06.50 ft.), while Ryan Sanders collected a tenth-place finish with a distance of 8.94 m (29-04.00 ft.). Both the Wildcat men and women turned in strong performances in relay events. In the women's 4 x 100m relay (composed of Apple Harris, Analisa Austin, Alese Forbes, and Nickesha Williams), B-CU topped the field, finishing in 48.84 seconds. The men's team (made up of Chris Jackson, Chris Herring, Eric Cray, and Martin Embry) matched their feat and also finished first, crossing the line in a time of 42.15 seconds. Also on the men's side of gold-earners, Kenson Nicholas out-leaped all other performers in the long jump, hitting a distance of 6.4 m (21-00.00 ft.). The event was quite worthwhile for the Wildcats, with three more scorers and five top-ten performers. Richard Carter finished third with a distance of 6.25 m (20-06.00 ft.), Johnareus Young finished fourth at 6.03 m (19-09.50 ft.), and Anthony Breaux came in ninth with a jump of 5.68 m (18-7.50 ft.). Rounding out the top ten, D.J. Howard finished tenth with a jump of 5.59 m (18-04.25 ft.). Beyond the women's first-place finishers, the Wildcats performed very well as a team, contributing to the B-CU overall finish in third. In the women's 1500m Run, Alexandria Condell again turned in a top-tier performance, finishing second in distance race, with a time of 5:10.20. In the 400m dash, B-CU scored three sets of points, led by Tanekia Flowers, who came in third in a time of 59.11. Also placing on the scorers list in the quarter mile, Asia Henry came in sixth (1:01), and Alese Forbes crossed at eighth (1:02.08). Vanderlyn Watts also placed in the top ten with a ninth place performance (1:02.51). The women wrapped up a solid day in field events as well. In the high jump, Ryan Sanders finished in fifth with a jump of 1.47 m (4-10.00 ft.). The women's long jump turned into a scoring event for the Wildcats, as Analisa Austin leaped a distance of 4.93 m (16-02.00 ft.) to finish sixth. For the women's 200m, B-CU freshman Apple Harris finished seventh with a time of 27.06 seconds. Although the Wildcat men's team did not turn in as many top finishes, they did start of the season with several solid performances, notching a scoring performer in each event they competed. In the men's 200m dash, Martin Embry crossed the line at third, running a time of 22.36 seconds. Also in the 200, Jameil McLeod crossed at sixth, finishing in a time of 23.16. In the 400m dash, Marcell Keeling finished third in a time of 50.90 seconds. In the 800m run, Tavares Harris crossed the line in fourth place, with a time of 2:05.12. In the longer distance event, the 1500m run, William Cosby finished fifth in a time of 4:19.51. In B-CU's only hurdling events, the Wildcat men placed top performers, led by Martin Embry in the 110 m hurdles, finishing sixth with a time of 18.36 seconds, while Richard Carter crossed at seventh in 20.05. In the 400 m hurdles, Demetrius Douglas-Davis finished seventh with a time of 1:02.67. In the first appearance of the 3000m steeplechase in the Outdoor season, the Wildcats placed two scorers. Derrick Taylor finished sixth at 11:48.75 and Tavares Harris finished seventh in 11:51.70. The Wildcats return to the track in three weeks, splitting up for different paths. The men head to Tampa for the USF Bulls invite on March 19, while the women head to Orlando to hit the UCF Quad on March 20.
