DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - With the opening of the 2010 cross country season rolling in quickly, the B-CU Wildcat program made moves to build on last season's progress. Garon Jackson joins the team just in time for the new season, coming aboard as a cross country assistant and the distance coach for track & field. “We have a good core of student-athletes and coaches, and I believe that we will be very successful,” said Jackson of his new program, “I want to compete for conference championships, but most importantly, I want the team to make a positive impact at Bethune-Cookman University and in the Daytona Beach community.” Jackson comes to Bethune-Cookman after a five-year stint as the head coach at Voorhees College, in addition to three years at VC as an assistant. During his time coaching at VC, Jackson's teams produced eleven national qualifiers, coached three All-Americans, and guided one USATF National Champion and one NAIA National Champion. “I am extremely excited about having Coach Garon Jackson join our staff,” said Head Coach Donald Cooper. “Though he respectfully declined the offer when I took over the program here, when the opportunity presented itself again he was ready to make the move to Daytona Beach. I have a long history with Coach Jackson; he was winning championships at Voorhees College while I was up the road at SC State doing the same. Coach Jackson brings years of successful head coaching experience, which will be a great asset to the program. He is driven and he is a winner. I feel that this staff has enormous compatibility, and believe this is the foundation of building a championship program here at the Great Bethune-Cookman University.”
Jackson is an accomplished athlete himself, and knows what it takes to build champions in the distance events. He still holds the Voorhees and Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference records in the 800 meter (1:51), 1,500 meter (3:56), 5,000 meter (14:45), 10,000 meter (30:02) and in cross country. He was the EIAC Most Valuable Runner for four years in cross country and three years in track and field. He was undefeated at the conference championships during his entire collegiate career. Jackson earns EIAC honors in Track and Field and Cross Country (1995-99). Also while at Voorhees College Jackson Track and Field and Cross Country teams combined for seven EIAC championships with Jackson placing first in every event in which he participated. Sumter High School nominated him to carry the 1996 Olympic Torch and he was giving the Community Hero Award for showing Leadership and the NAACP award for Dedication in 1995. Jackson is currently hard at work with Coach Cooper and fellow assistant coach Vance, prepping for the upcoming season in Wildcat cross country.
