DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It's the end of the season and the beginning of a new phase of Kevin Rono's running career at Bethune-Cookman University.

Rono earned an individual berth to this weekend's NCAA South Cross County regional in Hoover, Ala., giving the Wildcats' their first-ever men's representation in the sport's post-season. The meet is hosted by Samford University and held at Hoover's Veterans Park, Nov. 13, starting at 10:45 a.m.

The field includes teams from the Southeastn Conference, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team champion Florida A&M.

"The competition Kevin's facing will be strong," said B-CU Distance Coach Garon Jackson. "It's a great opportunity for Kevin and a beginning for him in a way."

One beginning is that this will be Rono's first attempt at running a ten kilometer (6.2 mile race). He's been training for the distance ever since the MEAC meet.

"I want to know where I am when it comes to this distance," Rono said. "This will give me a good idea of where I'm at and where I need to be."

One place where Jackson knows Romo has worked his way to is to be the leader of the cross country and distance runner program.

"He has improved tremendously," Jackson said. "He's exactly where I expected him to be after a complete season. His leadership qualities have intensified."

"It has been a wonderful season as far as motivation goes," Rono said. "I fully expected to get my 8K times into the 25 (minute range) and with Coach Jackson here, I know that is possible."

Visit www.B-CUathletics.com on Saturday to follow Rono's race.
