Wildcats Win Fifth Straight Home Game, Durrence Slam Leads Offense

 

B-CU upped its 2010 home record at Jackie Robinson Ballpark to 5-0 with a 14-9 triumph over Wagner College in the Saturday night finale of the Wildcat Invitational. Earlier on Saturday, Bethune-Cookman beat VCU 10-6 and Wagner College edged VCU 12-11. The tournament wraps up Sunday with a single game, 12 noon - VCU vs. B-CU.

 

Durrence Grand Slam Home Run In Third Inning Leads Offense


 

 

Wagner College continued its hot hitting to open up the game leading 3-1 into the third inning. B-CU junior slugger Ryan Durrence ripped a grand slam home run to give the Wildcats a 5-3 lead in the bottom half of the third.

 

Five more Wildcat runs scored in the fifth made it 10-3 with the inning highlighted by back-to-back squeeze play RBI bunts by Brandon Turner and Justin Hoyte. In the inning, B-CU also scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch to Alejandro Sanchez and an RBI double by Juan Perez and an unearned run.

 

Jairo Acevedo started at 3B and hit an RBI triple to left center in the sixth inning scoring Durrence who walked, upping the lead to 11-3.

 

Hoyte singled and scored on another Perez RBI double in the 7th inning. Jeremy Ruperto and Joey Sharkey had RBI singles in the inning closing the 'Cats scoring with 14 runs.

 

Morales With First Wildcat Pitching Win

Wildcat starting pitcher junior RHP Julio Morales (1-1) earned his first B-CU victory throwing six innings, striking out seven, allowing four hits ,three walks and three earned runs. Relievers Andrew Tilka and Gabriel Hernandez pitched the final three innings.

 

Bethune-Cookman (7-9) with the victory, hosts Virginia Commonwealth Sunday, 12 noon in the final game of the B-CU Invitational.  B-CU will continue at home on Tuesday, 6 p.m. hosting Stetson University before hitting the road and the opening of the MEAC Conference season next weekend in a three-game series in Tallahassee vs. FAMU.
