Wildcats Win Sixth Straight Home Game, Beat VCU 8-1

Sophomore RHP Rayan Gonzales Shines Pitching Seven Shut Out Innings

Winning their third straight game of the weekend B-CU Invitational, and sixth straight home game at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in the 2010 season, the Wildcats beat Virginia Commonwealth Sunday 8-1.

B-CU starter Rayan Gonzalez (2-2) pitched no-hit ball into the fifth inning and allowed only one hit in seven innings. Gonzalez struck out seven and walked two in his top performance of the season.

Joseph Munoz pitched the eight inning with two strike outs and allowed an unearned run.  Patrick Goelz pitched the ninth for B-CU, now 8-9 on the year. VCU (9-6) used two pitchers and was out-hit by B-CU 14-3 in the contest.

Jeremy Davis singled and scored on Brandon Turner's double to open the scoring in the second inning. Turner stole third and scored on a Justin Hoyte single to make the score 2-0.

A four-run third inning was highlighted by a Jairo Acevedo two-run single to right center and RBI ground outs by Davis and Turner.

The Wildcats went up 8-0 in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Peter O'Brien and a run-scoring double by Davis.

Five Wildcats had two hits each:  Hoyte 2-5, O'Brien 2-3, Emmanuel Castro 2-4, Davis 2-4, and Acevedo 2-4.

Coach Mervyl Melendez on the Wildcat 3-0 weekend:

"It was a great weekend for us. We swung the bats very well and there are some things of course that we can do better just like with any sport.  We will build on the confidence we have right now and the future is going to be very bright for us.  We must continue to work hard, we must continue to build on the offense, get our defense a little bit better and continue to throw strikes as Rayan (Gonzalez) did today. I'm very happy with this weekend, extremely happy going 3-0 at home and staying undefeated (at Jackie Robinson Ballpark). It says a lot about our ball club."

Melendez on the pitching of Gonzalez vs. VCU Sunday:

Today's ball game was a story of Rayan (Gonzalez) throwing strikes and actually he did an amazing job. He held VCU to one hit through seven innings that he pitched today. If you throw strikes it just shows that a lot of good things will happen.  We played great defensively behind him."

"Joey Munoz, we need him to be good for us to be successful throughout this year. You have to use all your guys.  Patrick Goelz finished the game and he hadn't pitched the whole weekend. We needed to get some guys like him and Munoz some innings because those are the guys we are counting on this year to solidify our bullpen. We have to get players involved in the game in order for us to continue to be good and grow as a team and reach the goals we have as a team."

B-CU will continue at home on Tuesday, 6 p.m. hosting Stetson University before hitting the road and the opening of the MEAC Conference season next weekend in a three-game series in Tallahassee vs. FAMU.
