O'Brien Ends Solid Summer As Team USA Leader In Home Runs (4) and Slugging Pct. (.694)

Playing in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer Baseball League is enough of an honor for a college baseball player. But to also be named to the Team USA Collegiate National team and compete in Team USA's international schedule of games in July and August is a topper that B-CU's junior catcher Peter O'Brien experienced this Summer.

O'Brien led Team USA with four home runs and had a .694 slugging percentage to lead the club (16-3 overall and runnerup to Cuba, losing 4-3 in 10 innings in the Gold Medal game Aug. 7 inside Meiji Junga Stadium in Toyko, Japan). The talented catcher played in 13 games for Team USA, starting 11 contests and he had a .306 batting average (11-36), fourth on the team, with 2 doubles and 10 RBI. He helped handle a Team USA pitching staff that was dominating with a 1.22 team ERA, striking out 188 batters in 162 innings pitched.

O'Brien, the 2010 MEAC MVP, was among college baseball's top sluggers last year with 20 home runs leading the Wildcats to a fifth straight MEAC Championship and NCAA Regional bid.

"We are all very proud of Peter," said B-CU Head Baseball Coach Mervyl Melendez. "He represented himself, his family, his country, and our program very well on the national level with Team USA.  And not only did he see and travel around the world, he also got to play with the best players in the world in his age bracket. We look forward to him continuing his success back here for us in his junior year at Bethune-Cookman."

The 2010-2011 Wildcats will be shooting for their 6th straight MEAC Championship and 11th title in 12 years for Melendez' 2011 team next January. "We have a talented group of team leaders coming back this year and we look for big things from many players to lead us to meet our team goals in the upcoming season," said Coach Melendez.
