JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Twenty-two for twenty-two from the line is amazing, but it can do only do so much against 72 percent shooting from the field.

Jacksonville’s second half field goal shooting spoiled Bethune-Cookman’s free throw perfection Thursday as the Dolphins posted a 67-60 victory before 3,541 at Veterans Memorial Arena.

Travis Cohn scored 14 points as the Dolphins (8-3) made 13 of 18 shots in the final 20 minutes to erase a six-point Wildcat (5-8) halftime lead.

Though perfect from the line, B-CU managed just 26.9 field goal shooting in the second half and 36 percent overall.

“We were beat by a team that’s played at a higher level than us,” said B-CU coach Clifford Reed. “They kept attacking us and we stopped attacking them. We started settling for jumpers. “We lacked mental toughness and hopefully we’ll develop that as the season goes,” Reed added. “They just drove and ` said you guys are not good enough to guard us off the dribble.’"

The free throw shooting was a bright spot for Reed.

“Anytime you go to the line 20 times and make them all, you’re happy,” Reed said. “You can’t get better than perfect.”

CJ Reed scored 22 points for B-CU, including 13-13 from the line. Alexander Starling was 8-8 from the line and finished with 10.

Cohn broke the game’s eleventh tie and put the Dolphins ahead for good on a lay-up with 2:52 remaining. Jacksonville got the lead up to 64-58 before Reed sank his final two with 32 seconds remaining.

B-CU led 20-14 in the first half on two Starling free throws with 9:19 left. Jacksonville took a 25-24 lead on a Delvin Graham jumper with 1:26 left, but Reed scored six in an 8-1 Wildcat run in the final 44 seconds of the period.

Starling led B-CU’s rebounding effort with seven. Garrius Holloman had eight points and six rebounds, while Javoris Bryant scored seven of his nine points in the second for the Wildcats. Aric Miller made his first start of the season, registering four points in 27 minutes

B-CU hosts Carver Bible Tuesday.
