Contact B-CU SID Mark Johnson (386) 481-2206 - CLIFFHANGERS – March Madness Edition News and Notes From B-CU’s Men’s Basketball Head Coach Cliff Reed.
Cage ‘Cats Back On Track With Home Win Over Howard Three-Game Road Trip Prior To MEAC Tournament March 8-13 in Winston-Salem, NC
Spring break for B-CU students is this upcoming week, and it will be nothing of the sort for the Wildcat basketball student-athletes playing at South Carolina State (Feb. 27) at Winston-Salem State (March 1) and Thursday March 4, at FAMU in a busy, busy upcoming schedule.
The team has been on the road for much of February including the two-week stay in Baltimore, Maryland and Salisbury, Maryland during the epic snow storms up the Eastern shore dumping 2-3 feet of snow and blizzards in the region. It was an interesting road trip for the “Florida sunshine teams” (B-CU’s men and women teams) in the midst of blizzards, and record-setting snow storms in Maryland and Washington D.C.
“We need to look at the next road trip one game at a time and we are hoping to steal a victory at South Carolina State Saturday, “ said Coach Reed. “We know we can play with these teams and we have played South Carolina State tough in games the past years and we have not beaten them. Playing at Winston-Salem then at FAMU to end the regular season, we have our work cut out for us.”
B-CU snapped its four-game losing streak with a hard-nosed 52-46 home MEAC win over Howard University at the Ocean Center, Monday, Feb. 22 to wrap up the home season on a high note.
"We want to play with this kind of defensive effort and it was good to see the Cage Cats back to playing tough, defending, and getting out in transition when we can," said Coach Reed.
Sophomore guard C. J. Reed scored 12 points and senior Jarrell Thomas, playing in his final home game for B-CU at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center - contributed 10 points in 28 minutes off the bench.
Both teams were under 35% field goal shooting in the contest. BCU was 22-63 (34.9%) and Howard (15-47, 31.9%). In the game, there were 32 offensive boards (19 by B-CU - six by Stanley Elliott). Albert Abrahams led B-CU with nine rebounds.
“I was elated with the win and the way we played defense tonight. I am happy with the effort and the defense. Tonight we had sixteen more shot attempts and everybody understands their role. We have a lot to play for and to finish strong in the MEAC regular season and continue to get ready for the conference tournament. We want to build momentum and get our swagger back (in the final three road games) and continue to work hard and out work everybody."
B-CU is next at South Carolina State University Saturday in Orangeburg and continuing to Winston-Salem State next Monday, March 1. The regular season concludes at FAMU, March 4 in Tallahassee.
