DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman leads the NCAA Football Championship Series Subdivision in total offense after the first week of the 2010 season. The Wildcats racked up 635 total yards in Saturday’s 70-10 victory over Edward Waters for the early national lead ahead of Liberty (599) and Central Arkansas.

B-CU is also tied with 25 other programs for first in sacks allowed, having given up none to the Tigers. B-CU is also second in rushing offense with 396 yards, second only to Georgia Southern’s 431 and second in scoring offense (Montana put up 73 on Western State).

B-CU is fourth in kickoff returns and third in passing efficiency, a category led by the Citadel which features B-CU Athletic Director Lynn Thompson’s son, Matt, at quarterback.

“This is a good thing, a very good thing,” said B-CU Head Coach Brian Jenkins. “Hopefully, we can keep this up. These rankings show that all the hard work the players have put in is starting to pay off.”

Individually, Courtney Keith and Isidore Jackson are tied for ninth as a result of their two touchdowns Saturday, while quarterback Matthew Johnson is tied for 16th in total offense (281 yards) and tied for 19th in rushing (122).

Both Johnson (263.2) and Troy Dannehower (313.6) ran up high passing effecieny numbers, but neither met the NCAA minimum of 15 attempts for ranking consideration.

B-CU is off this week and returns to action September 18 against Savannah State.
