Daytona Beach, Fla. - Bethune-Cookman College women's golf got off to a strong start for the spring season over the weekend with a second place showing in their annual Bethune-Cookman College Spring Invitational held at the Indigo Lakes Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Sophomore Fern Grimshaw was the leading golfer for the `Cats in the tournament as she shot herself to a tie for second place with a two-day total of 152 (76/76). Grimshaw tied with Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins for the second place finish. Grimshaw was second on the weekend with a total of 26 pars made and three birdies ... most coming on Par 5 scoring holes.

"Fern played excellent golf this weekend," exclaimed head coach B-CC Gary Freeman. "She's very consistent and very competitive every time she steps onto the course. Fern's just an outstanding golfer."

Right behind Grimshaw was teammate and freshman Matilda Creime who shot a very respectable 155 (81/74) for the tournament. Creime finished in the fifth spot as she converted on a tournament second-best four birdies.

The Wildcats' Ebonie Burgess rounded out the top 10 golfers for the event as she shot 80 on the first day, followed by a 78 on the next day for a 158 total. That was 14-over par for the event.

Grimshaw and Creime finished out 8-over and 11-over, respectively.

Burgess was outstanding on Par 3's for the weekend as she finished tied atop the standings on short holes with an even mark. Creime was even on Par 5 scoring holes.

Freshman Maria Alejandro Urquiola (Edo Anzoategui, Venezuela) competed in her first-ever event for the `Cats as she collected a 174 (90/84) for the weekend. Fellow freshman and Venezuelan Maria Garrido finished in the Top 20 for the tournament as she shot a weekend total of 164 (80/84) ... tied at 20th overall.

Sophomore Becky Dowell shot a 171 (89/82) for the event as she struggled a bit with her short game this weekend. Her putting was off as she three-putted most of the greens on the weekend.

"Overall, I'm happy with how things turned out despite the fact that we didn't get our best performance from one of our better players [Becky Dowell]," stated Coach Freeman. "I'm not upset with that because she'll bounce back, but Fern, Matilda and of course Ebonie did a magnificent job for us this weekend."

Daytona Beach Community College was the winner of the event as they shot a two-day total of 617 as a team with Rachel Edwards emerging as the individual winner. Edwards shot one struck under Grimshaw on the weekend.

Wofford (643), Stetson (647) and Charleston Southern (647) round out the top five for teams. Meanwhile, Olivia Higgins (CSU), Ashley Kozlowski (Stetson) and Matilda Creime of B-CC rounded out the top five for individuals.
