Simpson looks to be in great shape, and should be one of the Lady `Cats go-to players in the middle ... Uses a taller 6-foot-1 frame to get the block from almost any point along the net ... Comes into this season after leading B-CC in blocks last season, as well as ending the season ranked amongst the tops in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in that same category ... Could be a player to watch as an All-MEAC competitor towards the end of the year. JUNIOR SEASON: Vonetta started in all but one match for the Wildcats as a junior ... Played in 109 total games on the campaign ... Grabbed 218 kills for an average of 2.00 kills per game ... Led the Wildcats in blocks for the second consecutive season (102) ... Picked up 82 assisted blocks ... Registered the highest hitting percentage for the team (.224) ... Set up seven assists and posted 25 digs for a dual combination of offense and defense away from the net ... Collected 279 points for the `Cats ... Had a season-high hitting percentage (.521) with 12 kills on 21 attacks vs. South Carolina State (Nov. 12) ... Had a career-high 15 kills twice on the year against Coppin State (Oct. 16) and Morgan State (Oct. 15) ... Set up two assists against Delaware State (Nov. 18) in the MEAC Tournament ... Posted a new career-high five digs against UCF (Sept. 9) ... Had nine blocks at South Carolina State (Sept. 23) ... Recorded seven block assists against Florida International (Aug. 27). SOPHOMORE SEASON: Drew the starting position as a middle blocker in 17 matches on the season, while playing in 25-of-26 total matches for the Lady `Cats of Bethune-Cookman ... Saw action in 85 games on the year ... Was at or near the top of almost every statistical category, including leading the team in blocks (62) ... Finished the season fourth on the squad in kills (128) ... Had the highest hitting percentage (.264) on the team, including being ninth in that category in the MEAC ... Served up seven aces ... Drew in 25 digs on defense ... Had a team-high 51 block assists for an average of 0.73 blocks per game ... Scored 171.5 points on the year, good enough for fourth place on the team ... Posted a new career-high 12 kills against North Carolina A&T (Nov. 13) on 18 total attacks ... Also had three block assists that match ... Had other double-digit kills performances against local opponent Stetson (Nov. 2) with 11, and in-state opponent Florida Atlantic (Oct. 30) with 10 ... Registered a season-high six blocks (five assists) at North Carolina A&T (Oct. 23) ... Also recorded a new career-high three services against South Carolina State (Nov. 12). FRESHMAN SEASON: Making an immediate impact in her freshman season, Vonetta played in 96 of the Lady Wildcats' 114 games on the year ... Finished second in total blocks (56) on the squad ... She also recorded 113 kills on the campaign ... Got low for 25 digs on defense ... Dished up five (5) service aces on the year. PREP: Vonetta earned First Team All-Region honors at Sam Houston High School ... Named as Honorable Mention for All-Region (2001) ... Her team played in the SAISP District ... Named to the All-District Second Team in basketball, as well as All-Tournament Team. PERSONAL: Vonetta Simpson is the daughter of Gail and Clarence Simpson ... She was born on Oct. 27, 1984 ... Vonetta is currently working towards a degree in Kinesiology at Bethune-Cookman ... Says the biggest athletic influence in her life has been her elementary coach, Coach Miller, because he is the one who started her in running sprints and motivating her. |
